- Overview
Satopanth Tal Trek β Overview
Satopanth Tal is a crystal clear green water, the triangular lake at an elevation of 4,600 meters above sea level β adorned in the midst of snow-shrouded peaks. The name derives from two words: “Sato” (truth) and “Pantha” (path or way), meaning “the path of truth.” It is believed that the Holy Trinity β Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh β meditated on its three corners. Some legends say that at the end of the Mahabharata, the Pandavas took the route from Mana Village to reach the steps to heaven via the Swargarohini glacier and Satopanth Lake.
The trek begins at Mana Village β India’s last village near the Indo-Tibetan border β just a few kilometers from the sacred Badrinath shrine. The trail passes through the famous Bhim Pul (a natural rock bridge), Vasudhara waterfall, and Laxmi Van (a thick forest) before reaching the pristine lake. Satopanth Trek is one of the most offbeat, crowd-free, and spiritually powerful treks in Uttarakhand.
The lake is surrounded by Mount Chaukhamba, Mount Neelkanth, Mount Swargarohini, and Mount Balakun. The campsite at Chakratirtha offers a beautiful view of the Satopanth glacier, with the Swargarohini and Chaukhamba tiers towering in the background. Reaching the lake, which stays hidden until the final moment, is a moment of profound awe.
