Satopanth Tal Trek β€” Overview

Satopanth Tal is a crystal clear green water, the triangular lake at an elevation of 4,600 meters above sea level β€” adorned in the midst of snow-shrouded peaks. The name derives from two words: “Sato” (truth) and “Pantha” (path or way), meaning “the path of truth.” It is believed that the Holy Trinity β€” Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh β€” meditated on its three corners. Some legends say that at the end of the Mahabharata, the Pandavas took the route from Mana Village to reach the steps to heaven via the Swargarohini glacier and Satopanth Lake.

The trek begins at Mana Village β€” India’s last village near the Indo-Tibetan border β€” just a few kilometers from the sacred Badrinath shrine. The trail passes through the famous Bhim Pul (a natural rock bridge), Vasudhara waterfall, and Laxmi Van (a thick forest) before reaching the pristine lake. Satopanth Trek is one of the most offbeat, crowd-free, and spiritually powerful treks in Uttarakhand.

The lake is surrounded by Mount Chaukhamba, Mount Neelkanth, Mount Swargarohini, and Mount Balakun. The campsite at Chakratirtha offers a beautiful view of the Satopanth glacier, with the Swargarohini and Chaukhamba tiers towering in the background. Reaching the lake, which stays hidden until the final moment, is a moment of profound awe.

Detailed Itinerary β€” Satopanth Tal Trek

1

DAY

Long but scenic drive from Rishikesh through Devprayag, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, and Joshimath to reach the sacred Badrinath. Visit the famous Badrinath temple β€” one of the Char Dham pilgrimage sites β€” for blessings before your trek begins. Overnight stay at Badrinath.

2

DAY

Visit Mana Village β€” India’s last inhabited village before the Indo-Tibetan border. Walk over Bhim Pul, the natural rock bridge where the Saraswati River disappears underground. See the famous Vyas Gufa (Sage Vyasa’s Cave) and Ganesh Gufa. Trek through Laxmi Van β€” a thick sacred forest β€” to reach the campsite. Overnight camping.

3

DAY

Start the trek early today as you will be crossing some tricky sections on the trail. Ascend to the ridge’s high point and trek along the valley. The campsite of Chakratirtha has a beautiful view of the top Satopanth glacier, with the Swargarohini and Chaukhamba tiers towering in the background. On reaching the campsite, gaze at the glaring west face of Mount Neelkanth. Overnight stay at Chakratirtha.

4

DAY

Early morning start for the sacred lake. Trek along the glacier and rocky moraine terrain. The lake stays hidden until the final moment of approach β€” when it suddenly reveals itself, it is a moment of profound spiritual and visual awe. The triangular Satopanth lake has a fringe of over 1 km and is of a calming emerald green colour. The lake is encircled by the Chaukhamba massif, Neelkanth, Swargarohini, and Balakun peaks. Return to Chakratirtha for overnight stay.

5

DAY

Descend through the valley with views that feel even more magical on the return. Cross back through the alpine terrain and descend to Laxmivan campsite. Overnight camping.

6

DAY

Trek back through Mana Village. This time take a closer look at Vasudhara Falls β€” a spectacular 122-metre waterfall, believed to be sacred; it is said that only people without sin can be touched by the spray of this waterfall. Overnight stay at Badrinath. Explore Badrinath temple in the evening.

7

DAY

Return journey to Rishikesh through the scenic Chamoli and Garhwal hills. The drive back offers a final opportunity to reflect on the extraordinary sacred and natural experiences of the past days. Arrive in Rishikesh by evening, completing a truly spiritual and visually magnificent Himalayan pilgrimage.

The best time for Kedarkantha Trek is from mid-December to early April, when the trail is blanketed in fresh snow and the views are at their most magical.
