The Phulara ridge is one of the stunning treks within the GovindPashu National Park region which offers never-ending landscapes throughout the trek. This trek offers an incredible and unique experience of traversing through the ridge, which is very rare to be discovered in the Indian Himalayas. The whole trek delivers 250- degree panorama of snow-capped Himalayan peaks. The plethora of landscapes is very promising in this trek, this is what makes Phulara Ridge one of the best treks in Uttarakhand.

As we descend from Phulara Ridge the trail enters into Pushatara meadows. The vast meadow grounds are eye-catching highlights of this trek. Camping in the carpets of the grassland covered up by 270 degrees Himalayan Mountains is also a tremendous happening.

If you are looking for an exotic experience in Uttarakhand without trekking to crowd-packed places, Phulara Ridge is best to pay a visit before the crowd arrives.

Day 1: Dehradun to Sankri

  • Distance: 200 km- Drive
  • Time: 7-8 hours
  • Altitude: Dehradun – 447 metres, Sankri– 1,950 metres

Past moving from the pickup points we drive timely from Dehradun to avoid being stuck in traffic. The 200 km drive takes up to 7-8 hours to reach Sankri. We cross the hills of Queen Mussoorie offering a beautiful landscape of Dehradun city from the riddle drive of the road. Passing through the quaint little towns of Nainbagh, Damta, Purola adds magnificence to the journey. The river accompanies us in the direction of sankri, singing and roaring with its powerful audible songs. Sankri is a quite popular attraction for most of the trekking community and also the base camp for many treks like Har ki Dun, Ruinsara Tal, Bali Pass, and many more. Overnight stay will be in a guesthouse or homestay of Sankri.

Day 2: Sankri to Sikolta

  • Distance: 11 km – Trek
  • Time: 4 – 5 Hours
  • Altitude: Sankri – 1,950 metres, Sikolta– 2,740 metres

The trek begins ahead of the sankri market, we follow up to ascend through the trail of giant pine forests. On the right side of the trail, the peaks of Swargarohini can be glimpsed, enhancing the loveliness of the dense forest trail. As we enter another clearing from the forest route, we get the first glimpse of Phulara Ridge. This place is also home to various types of birds and if you are lucky you will spot some. On reaching Sikolta, lay your backpacks in your tents and you can visit a nearby lake known as Juda kaTalab. This high-altitude lake is a prime key attraction for winter as it remains frozen during that period.

Day 3: Sikolta to BhojGadi

  • Distance: 10 km – Trek
  • Time: 5-6 Hours
  • Altitude: Sikolta – 2,740 meters, BhojGadi – 3,526 meters

Today’s trail starts up with an ascend within the forest again. The ascending path continues for 30 minutes accompanying the dense forest trail with us. To reach Karsu Thach we cross a small bridge over the stream which separates the valley into two. As the tree line declines at this part of the trek we can get a clear sight of the Kedarkantha peak on our right. Kedarknatha Is one of the quite popular winter treks of Uttarakhand, which offers a view of snow-capped Himalayan peaks from the summit of 3200 meters. We also spot a variety of booming flowers on our way to today’s campsite. The trail ascends and takes us further to a lovely meadow of Bhojkandi presenting a mesmerizing view of Himalayan peaks like Devkyara, Vijay top, Kedarknatha, and many others. The night halt for today is in Bhojkandi.

Day 4: BhojGadi to Pustara via Phulara Ridge

  • Distance: 6 km – Trek
  • Time: 4 Hours
  • Altitude: Pustara – 2,900 meters, Phulara Ridge – 3,696 meters

This day is the most exciting part of the trek. The top of the phulara ridge is visible from our campsites. After having breakfast we leave from the campsites to pustara via Phulara Ridge. About an hour from Bhojgadi, the ridge walk to Phulara begins. The mountain ridge is a geographical feature consisting of a chain of mountains or hills that form a continuous elevated crest for some distance. The exhilarating 2 Hours walk on the ridge feels like a never-ending one. This segment of the voyage grants the majestic panoramic sight of Garhwal ranges like Bandarpooch, Rangnala, Swargarohini, Kala Nag, Devkyara, Hanuman Top, Sarutal Top, Vijay Top, and Kedarkantha. The landscape from the top of the ridge leaves travelers stunned. Many times we are blessed to spot Himalayan monal in this habitat of the trek.

As we descend from the last section of the ridge, the undulating pushtarbugyal appears. Adding on the beauty of the wide meadow variety of wildflowers can be spotted, including the rare summer blooms like Bhrahmakamal and fankamal. Brahmakal is a state flower of Uttrakhand state and is used in many ritual practices of the villages. Camping in this grassland is the best part of the whole trek. Enjoy a snack and relax under the clear sky after a hectic day.

Day 5: Pushrara to taluka to sankri

  • Distance: 8 km – Trek | 10 km – Drive
  • Time: 5 Hours – Trek |1 Hour – Drive
  • Altitude: Taluka – 2,430 metres, Sankri – 1,950 metres

This is the last day of the trek so you need to push yourself a little till we reach Taluka. As soon as we escape from the Meadows towards the forest trail, the dense forest welcomes up functioning as an obstacle to sun rays during summers. On reaching Taluka you will be greeted by the warm-hearted villagers and their beautiful smiles. Do not forget to carry some sweets for the little kids, who will accompany you all the way. You will surely appreciate the architecture of tiny wooden houses and the simple domestic lifestyle in the remote villages of Uttarakhand. Our vehicles will drive you from the dirt road of Taluka to Sankri.
