Ali Bugyal trek, a route that promises a profound encounter with the Himalayas, traversing through Asia’s highest alpine meadows. This trek takes adventurers through vibrant ecosystems and scenic landscapes, including the lush Kumaon region and into the rugged terrain of the Garhwal Himalayas. As you pass through ancient forests, the trek offers breathtaking vistas of river confluences at Devprayag, Rudraprayag, and Karnaprayag, enhancing the spiritual ambiance of the journey. The highlight is undoubtedly Ali Bugyal, the largest high-altitude meadow in Asia, which presents a spectacular display of floral biodiversity and panoramic mountain views that include the majestic Trishul and Nanda Ghunti peaks. This trek is not just a physical journey but a deep dive into the natural and cultural richness of this lesser-known part of the Himalayas, offering tranquility, adventure, and a chance to witness some of the most awe-inspiring landscapes on the planet. The path that weaves through lush Himalayan forests abundant with rhododendrons, oaks, and birch. Day 1: Rishikesh to Lohajung
Embark on your adventure from Rishikesh to Lohajung, setting off on a journey that spans approximately 250 kilometers. This day-long drive takes you through the heart of Uttarakhand, transitioning from the bustling spiritual life of Rishikesh into the tranquil and majestic settings of the Himalayas. As you travel, the landscape gradually shifts, offering glimpses of rural mountain life and the natural beauty that characterizes this region, setting the tone for the trekking experience that lies ahead.
Day 2: Lohajung to Didna Village
To commence your trek from Lohajung to Didna Village, you’ll first take a local vehicle to Kuling, a journey that lasts about 30 minutes. From Kuling, the trek starts with a downhill walk to the Neel Ganga river. After crossing the river, the ascent toward Didna Village begins. This segment of the trek takes you through a forest filled with rhododendrons, Himalayan bamboos and oaks, adding a vibrant natural backdrop to your trek. Once in Didna, a small village known for its quaint farms and fishing opportunities, you can explore the local area. In the evening, stroll to a viewpoint that offers sights of Wan Village, the Brahmatal summit, and a small section of Ali Bugyal, providing a panoramic glimpse into the surrounding beauty.
Day 3: Didna Village to Ali Bugyal
On Day 3, the trek from Didna Village to Ali Bugyal starts with a steep ascent through a dense forest of oak and rhododendron trees. This challenging first half of the trek is also your last chance to refill water at Tolpani, the final water point. As you push through the forest, the terrain gradually levels out and opens into expansive alpine meadows. The second half of the trek features a more gradual ascent, allowing you to enjoy the sprawling greenery and the open skies. As the evening approaches, one of the best parts of today’s trek occurs near the campsite, where you can witness a breathtaking sunset, painting the sky with vibrant hues that enhance the tranquil beauty of Ali Bugyal. This serene moment caps a day of vigorous hiking, offering both rest and spectacular natural beauty.
Day 4: Ali Bugyal to Garoli Patal via Bedni Bugyal and Bedni Kund
Today’s trek takes you from Ali Bugyal to Bedni Bugyal, where you’ll experience vast expanses of green meadows stretching under the sky. After exploring Bedni Bugyal, you’ll continue to the sacred Bedni Kund, a serene spot known for its reflective waters and spiritual significance. The journey then leads you through more picturesque landscapes as you make your way to Garoli Patal. Here, amidst dense forests, you’ll set up camp with a spectacular view of Mt. Trishul. From Bedni Top, the towering peaks of Nanda Ghunti and Trishul dominate the horizon, offering a close-up of the majestic Himalayas, enhancing the experience of wilderness and natural grandeur. This part of the trek is filled with natural beauty, offering opportunities for reflection and tranquility amidst the breathtaking surroundings of the Himalayas.
Day 5: Ghairoli Patal to Wan, then drive to Lohajung
The last day of the trek begins from Ghairoli Patal and winds through serene forest trails down to Wan. This leg of the journey allows you to immerse in the lush greenery and quiet ambiance of the forest as you gradually descend. Once in Wan, the trekking portion concludes, and you’ll take a drive back to Lohajung. This transition from the peaceful isolation of the trails to the more bustling base camp marks a reflective end to the trekking experience, offering a moment to assimilate the natural beauty you’ve encountered along the way.
Day 6: Lohajung to Rishikesh
We will depart from Lohajung for the return journey to Rishikesh. This marks the end of your trekking adventure as you retrace the route back through the scenic landscapes of the Garhwal Himalayas. The drive back offers a final opportunity to reflect on the experiences and vistas of the past days, winding through the same mountain roads that welcomed you at the start of your journey. The drive is typically about 10-12 hours, bringing you back to the urban surroundings of Rishikesh by evening.
