Complete Guide to Panch Kedar Trek 2026

In short: the Panch Kedar Trek is a 12-day pilgrimage trek in Uttarakhand that visits five Shiva temples (Kedarnath, Madhyamaheshwar, Tungnath, Rudranath and Kalpeshwar) and covers roughly 107 km on foot. With Mountainiax it starts and ends in Rishikesh and costs ₹44,000 + 5% GST. All five temples are open together only from about late May to mid October.

Most people know Kedarnath. Far fewer know it is one of five. The Panch Kedar circuit is the older, quieter and harder version of a Shiva yatra, and you earn each darshan on foot.

The legend behind the five Kedars

After the Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas wanted to be forgiven for the lives lost. Lord Krishna told them to seek Shiva. Shiva, not ready to meet them, slipped into the Garhwal Himalayas and hid among cattle as a bull. Bhima spotted him and held on to the hump as the bull sank into the ground. Shiva’s body then surfaced in five places, and the Pandavas built a temple at each one. Tradition says the head appeared at Pashupatinath in Nepal.

Panch Kedar Ke Naam - The Five Sacred Temple Names:

Kedarnath: The hump (back) of Lord Shiva – Most sacred Jyotirlinga | First Panch Kedar temple

Tungnath: The arms of Lord Shiva – World’s highest Shiva temple | Second Panch Kedar temple

Rudranath: The face of Lord Shiva – Most challenging trek | Third Panch Kedar temple

Madhyamaheshwar: The navel of Lord Shiva – Scenic valley setting | Fourth Panch Kedar temple

Kalpeshwar: The matted locks (Jata) of Lord Shiva – Year-round accessible | Fifth Panch Kedar temple

This 12-day Panch Kedar Trek itinerary covers approximately 107 kilometers, reaching altitudes up to 12,000 feet. The Panch Kedar route map takes you through dense rhododendron forests, pristine alpine meadows (bugyals), ancient villages, and panoramic views of Nanda Devi, Chaukhamba, and Trishul peaks. Check out our photos for a visual journey.

Unlike the Char Dham Yatra, the Panch Kedar Trek in Uttarakhand is less crowded, offering a more intimate connection with nature and divinity. It’s considered the complete pilgrimage for Shiva devotees seeking the authentic Panch Kedar experience.

Panch Kedar Ke Naam: The 5 Sacred Temples

According to Hindu mythology, after the Mahabharata war, the Pandavas went in search of Lord Shiva to seek his blessings. To avoid them, Lord Shiva transformed himself into a bull and disappeared into the ground. His body later reappeared in five different parts at separate locations, which are now known as the Panch Kedar temples of Uttarakhand. View Panch Kedar photos and temple details below.

Kedarnath Temple

Kedarnath is the holiest of the five shrines and one of the most visited high-altitude temples in the world. The stone temple, surrounded by snow-capped peaks including Kedar Dome and Kedarnath Peak, has stood for over a thousand years. Arriving here is the emotional peak of the entire yatra.

Mythology: Built by the Pandavas to seek Lord Shiva’s blessings after the Kurukshetra war.

Tungnath Temple

Tungnath sits above the treeline at Chopta, one of the most scenic locations in Uttarakhand. The trail from Chopta passes through meadows of rhododendron before opening to 360° panoramic views at Chandrashila summit — with Nanda Devi, Trishul, Chaukhamba, and Kedar Peak all visible on clear days.

Mythology: Over 1,000 years old, believed to be built by Arjuna.

Rudranath Temple

Rudranath is the wildest and most remote of the five shrines. The trail climbs through dense oak and rhododendron forest before emerging onto open bugyals with views of Nanda Devi and Trishul. This is the longest single-day approach on the circuit and the one that challenges trekkers the most.

Mythology: The only Panch Kedar where Lord Shiva’s face is worshipped.

Madhyamaheshwar Temple

Set in a bowl-shaped valley surrounded by snow peaks, Madhyamaheshwar is considered the most picturesque of the five temples. The meadows (bugyals) around the temple are covered in wildflowers during the trekking season, and views of Kedarnath, Chaukhamba, and Neelkanth are breathtaking.

Mythology: Connected to the same legend as other Panch Kedar temples.

Kalpeshwar Temple

Kalpeshwar is a unique cave temple tucked into a gorge in the Urgam Valley. Unlike the other four, it requires no long trekking and remains open throughout the year. Its setting — a natural cave with cascading streams nearby — gives it a distinctly mystical atmosphere.

Mythology: Unique cave temple dedicated to Lord Shiva’s sacred locks.

Everything About Panch Kedar

Complete guide covering best time, difficulty, preparation tips, packing list, and how to reach for your Panch Kedar Trek in Uttarakhand.

The best time for Panch Kedar Yatra is late May to June and September to mid October. The reason is simple: all five temples are open together only for a few months. In 2026 Rudranath opened on 18 May and Madhyamaheshwar on 21 May, while Rudranath closed around 17 October. We time every batch so these two temples are open when we reach them.

  • Late May–June: clear skies, long days, rhododendron still blooming at the start of the season, great for photography
  • September–mid October: washed green valleys, sharp mountain views, comfortable days, thinner crowds
  • Avoid July–August: heavy rain, slippery trails, landslides, leeches in the forest sections
  • Avoid mid October–April: Rudranath closes first, and by November most temples are shut. Winter worship moves to Ukhimath, Makkumath and Gopeshwar

Check live weather before you travel on the India Meteorological Department site.

The Panch Kedar Trek is rated Moderate to Difficult based on several factors:

• Total Distance: 107 km of trekking over 12 days • Maximum Altitude: 12,073 ft (Tungnath Temple) • Daily Walking: 6-8 hours on most trek days • Terrain: Mix of steep ascents, rocky paths, and forest trails

  • Mind: basic stays, limited network and cold nights are part of the experience
  • Clothes: 3–4 quick-dry t-shirts, 2 trek pants, thermal inner wear, fleece or down jacket, waterproof jacket and rain cover, woollen cap, gloves, sunglasses

Our 12-Day Trek Itinerary

Our 12-day Panch Kedar trek itinerary is built for steady altitude gain and manageable days. The order is Kedarnath → Madhyamaheshwar → Tungnath → Rudranath → Kalpeshwar, finishing with the easiest temple while your legs recover. Distances, hours and altitudes are approximate.

Your Panch Kedar Trek begins with a scenic drive from Rishikesh to Guptkashi/Sonprayag via NH-7. En route, witness the sacred confluences at Devprayag (Bhagirathi & Alaknanda) and Rudraprayag (Alaknanda & Mandakini), while enjoying breathtaking Himalayan landscapes. Stop at a local dhaba for a traditional Garhwali meal before reaching your guesthouse. After check-in, relax and prepare your daypack for the next day’s trek to Kedarnath.

Start with a shared jeep ride from Sonprayag to Gaurikund, where the trek to Kedarnath begins. Follow the scenic Mandakini River through Jungle Chatti, Bheembali, and Linchauli before reaching Kedarnath. The final stretch rewards you with breathtaking views of the Kedarnath Temple and the majestic Kedar Dome. Attend the evening Aarti for a memorable spiritual experience and stay overnight at a GMVN guesthouse or campsite.

Begin your day with the divine morning Darshan at Kedarnath Temple. Afterward, descend on a 16 km trek to Gaurikund, following the same scenic trail. From Gaurikund, take a shared jeep to Sonprayag, collect your luggage, and drive to Ukhimath or Ransi for an overnight stay. Ukhimath, the winter seat of Lord Kedarnath, offers a peaceful setting to rest and recover before the next stage of the Panch Kedar Trek.

After breakfast, drive to Ransi Village, the starting point of the 23 km Madhyamaheshwar trek. Begin your trek through dense forests, traditional Garhwali villages, and alongside the Madhyamaheshwar Ganga River. Cover approximately 6 km to reach Gaundhar, a peaceful riverside village surrounded by Himalayan wilderness. Check into a local homestay and rest for the next day’s challenging ascent.

Begin an early trek from Gaundhar to Madhyamaheshwar, covering a steep mountain trail through oak and rhododendron forests before reaching beautiful alpine meadows. By evening, arrive at the sacred Madhyamaheshwar Temple, where the navel of Lord Shiva is worshipped, with the majestic Chaukhamba Peaks in the backdrop. Attend the temple rituals and stay overnight in a local homestay or community guesthouse.

Start before sunrise with a 2 km hike to Budha Madhyamaheshwar for spectacular views of the Chaukhamba Peaks and the Garhwal Himalayas. After returning, begin the 16 km descent to Ransi. From there, drive to Chopta, passing through scenic forests and terraced mountain villages. Check into your campsite or guesthouse and rest for the next phase of the Panch Kedar Trek.

Today’s 9 km trek begins from Chopta to the sacred Tungnath Temple, the world’s highest Shiva temple. Continue to the Chandrashila Summit for panoramic views of Nanda Devi, Trishul, and the Kedar Peaks before descending back to Chopta. Later, drive to Sagar Village, the base camp for the next challenging section of the Panch Kedar Trek, and stay overnight at a local homestay.

Begin one of the most challenging sections of the Panch Kedar Trek with a trek from Sagar Village to Panar Bugyal. The trail climbs through dense forests before opening into vast alpine meadows with stunning Himalayan views. On reaching Panar Bugyal, relax at the campsite and spend the night in tents under the star-filled mountain sky, preparing for the trek to Rudranath the next day.

Leave your heavy backpacks at Panar Bugyal and trek to the sacred Rudranath Temple via the scenic Pitradhar Ridge, the highest point of this section. After offering prayers at the temple, where the face (Mukha) of Lord Shiva is worshipped, return to Panar Bugyal along the same trail. Enjoy dinner and an overnight stay at the campsite amidst the peaceful Himalayan meadows.

Begin the descent from Panar Bugyal to Sagar Village, taking your time on the steep trail. After completing the trek, drive to the peaceful Urgam Valley, the base for the final temple of the Panch Kedar Trek. Check into a hotel or homestay, refresh, and rest before the last day’s trek to Kalpeshwar.

Drive into the beautiful Urgam Valley, famous for its apple orchards and terrace farming. From the road head, it is a short, easy walk to the Kalpeshwar Temple. Kalpeshwar is the only Panch Kedar temple open yearround. It is a small rock cave where Lord Shiva ‘ s Jata (matted locks) are worshipped. Spend some quiet time in meditation here, concluding your spiritual circuit. We will spend the night at Urgam, explore the villlage life today.

After breakfast, commence the long drive back toward Rishikesh. Follow the winding rivers back down the mountains, watching the landscape transition from high peaks back to the bustling foothills. Arrive in Rishikesh by early evening, marking the successful completion of the magnificent Panch Kedar Trek.
